When I was a kid, my dad gave me an old, analog pedometer. I absolutely loved the concept of being able to track how many miles a day I was walking without realizing it. That was over 25 years ago.
Nike+ revolutionized the concept creating a direct interface between runners’/walkers’ sneakers and their mobile devices.
Today, Jawbone officially releases its “UP” product. Fortunately, my local Best Buy already started selling them Friday so I eagerly picked one up and have been wearing it around 36 hours.
The band syncs with its companion mobile app using the iPhone’s headphone jack.
The interface is simple and elegant. There are three main things to track – sleep, steps, and food. You can see from above that I got more than enough sleep on Friday night and tend to walk a whole lot.
Rotating the phone reveals a detailed timeline view of different events. Swiping allows users to go back in time and see their UP history.
My favorite UP feature is how the wristband tracks quality of sleep. It fascinates me to see the constant flux between deep and light sleep (and how I went back to sleep after awaking to the wristband's vibrating alarm).
The app also has a built in social stream that one’s “friends” can follow (You can search for other UP users and friend request them and become part of your “team”) There are lots of other great features including the ability to do challenges/set goals. The product is off to a great start and a very fun evolution to my old pedometer.
Interesting! I saw them at the Apple Store on Friday and did some research on Saturday. The sleep alarm seems pretty cool. I'm on Sprint and my first iPhone is supposed to arrive this week. I'm also looking forward to using RunKeeper, the first GPS, HRM, and Music solution that might actually work.

Erica and I started using the Fitbit for a while (similar device), and though I LOVE the activity and sleep tracking, the fitbit (like this I assume) goes in the ditch when it comes to caloric input. This is a huge piece of the overall health puzzle, and it's really cumbersome to add in everything you eat, manually. Especially if you go out to restaurants a lot, or cook at home, or just eat anything where you don't have accurate nutrition information to input. If someone can solve for that crucial piece, these devices will be solid.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who scheduled a news conference for Tuesday morning, had issued a statement explaining the reasoning behind the sweep. “The law that created Zuccotti Park required that it be open for the public to enjoy for passive recreation 24 hours a day,” the mayor said in the statement. “Every since the occupation began, that law has not been complied with” because the protesters had taken over the park, “making it unavailable to anyone else.”

This is a great mobile app for those who are on a fitness program. These are the types of activities where progress track reports bear the most significance.
